All About Me
  1. Golf Achievements: I have been a varsity golfer since my freshman year and was part of the regional championship team and the 3rd place team at the state championships.  This past year I was named First Team All State. I have won a number of junior tour events and typically finish in the top 10 of most events I enter.  I was recently the Medalist in the Trusted Choice Big "I" Junior State Championship and shot a final round of 69. I have also had 3 Top 10 finishes and an 11th place finish in 4 AJGA events this summer.
  2. Other Achievements: I have been an honor roll student and academic all conference athlete all 3 years. I also play on the varsity basketball team where I was named the VIP this year. I am also enrolled in the Leadership program at Milford High School
  3. Attributes that will make me a good college student-athlete golfer: I have a strong academic background and have consistently received good grades while participating in sports and jobs outside of school. I have been continually improving my golf performance and tend to be very consistent. Even my bad rounds are not usually too bad. In 35 tournament rounds there have been only 3 times have I not shot below 80.
  4. I will be a good college teammate because: I have played team sports all my life (football, soccer, baseball, hockey, basketball and golf) and embrace the teamwork that makes for a successful team. I have been the captain of teams and understand the dynamics of working with different people and situations. I am currently enrolled in the leadership program at my high school and will be attending an athletic leadership camp this summer.
  5. I am looking for a university and golf program that: I am looking for a college golf program that is very competitive and one where I can contribute to its success.  I understand that my first priority in going to college is for the education and will look at that as a key factor in my decision as to where I will go to college.
  6. My college goals are: To graduate with a degree and to continue to improve my golf skills so that I may have the opportunity to play competitively after college.
  7. I am looking for a college golf coach that: Helps drive the players to be better. One who understands the differences in each player and can utilize the strengths of each for the benefit of the team. I have enjoyed coaches who communicate well with the players, both in a positive and constructive manner.
  8. The strengths of my golf game are: Consistency and accuracy. I rarely have large swings in my scores and typically am able to keep the ball in play and am quite accurate with my iron play.
  9. The weaknesses of my golf game are: I would like to improve my putting.
  10. I think my golf game will continue to improve because: I work hard at improvement and I have been basically self taught until recently.  As I understand the details of the golf swing and equipment better I feel I will continue to improve. I have begun to hit the ball farther this year which was a goal and continue to have a strong short game which helps in my scoring.
Personal Statement
My name is Chris Cunningham. I have been playing golf since I was nine. I am currently attending Milford High School in Milford, Mi and will be graduating with the class of 2010. The golf program at my school has been one of the best in the state for many years. As a freshman, I was exposed to some very extreme competition. We had four seniors who held 4 of the 6 slots for each match and tournament. I had to compete with the other 8 players each week to see who would play with the seniors, I was fortunate to play well and earned a permanent spot and contributed to our team’s success including winning the toughest regional in the state for the fifth straight year and coming in a tie for second at state finals.
I didn’t really realize my potential in golf until about 5 years ago when I really started to take interest and play competitively. Playing as much golf as I have has taught me many life lessons. Honesty, patience, and humbleness are just a few of the many benefits I have gained from playing the game of golf. Honesty, patience and humbleness have helped me on the golf course in my early years, and I know as I get older, these are going to be important traits in almost every aspect of life and will make me a better person in the long run. I play golf every day I can. Fortunately, I enjoy working on my game, some perceive practice as work but I look at it as an opportunity to get better. I thoroughly enjoy hitting range balls, working on my putting stroke and all other aspects of my game.
Although golf is my true passion, nothing comes before school. I work hard in school and currently have a 3.3 GPA. I also play basketball and this past two years I have been a member of the varsity team at my school. I look at myself as a fairly decent athlete and I am as competitive as they come. I hate losing more than anything but have learned to accept it because it’s going to happen, it does to everyone.
I have greatly improved my golf game over this past year and more specifically this past summer. Over the summer I played in over 20 tournaments and nearly 30 competitive rounds of golf and had a scoring average of 74.2. My scores were consistently in the 70’s with three rounds in the 60s.  I earned 1st team All State and for the second consecutive year earned all-conference, all district and all county honors.
Goals I have for me and golf are to just continue playing. I continue to improve my game and plan on playing competitively in college, if I go beyond that, even better. I continue to work toward my goal of playing in college and know how much work is needed to reach this goal. I know I have the ability to continue past high school competitively and I know I’m more than willing to put forth the necessary effort to reach my goals.
Overall, I feel like golf has made me a better person and will contribute to my life in a positive way. Wherever this great game takes me, I know I will always be able to continue playing, no matter what level.
