- Golf Achievements: I was ranked first of the 14+Under category in Switzerland at the age of 14 (including 5 wins out of 7 events). I then had the chance to represent my country in 2 Dutch Junior Masters ( made the cut in 2003 ) and one European Young Master in 2005. I finished third at the boys 18+Under Swiss Final Championship in 2007 as well.
In 2009, I ended up with 6th place and a 3rd place in Swiss National Championships, constantly beating guys that play golf college in school like UVA or Georgetown for example. I aslo got into the swiss amateur championship which is an international championship. Finally this year has been concluded by a consistancy of shooting regularly in the low 70s and high 60s with a personal best of 66.
- Other Achievements: In addition to golf, I achieved strong academic perfomance. I graduated from high school with honors in June 2008 with a score of 4.7 out of 6 and was ranked 5th out of 20 in my class. I was having math / physics as my major which is considered to be the most difficult and economics & law as my minor.
Last Summer, i did an internship in a company specialised in FX & Equity trading. I learned about trading fundamentals, charting, market behaviours and I even got the opportunity to be responsible for small trading activities.
- Attributes that will make me a good college student-athlete golfer: The 9 months I spent at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy helped me to get a high degree of organisation, self-motivation, drive to work hard and the ability to resist all distraction.
Presently doing my first college year at Lausanne University, I learned time management which allowed me to stay disciplined in my studies and to find the necessary time to practice my golf.
I am a team player, persistent and I always focus on my goals and dreams.
- I will be a good college teammate because: I enjoyed playing sports team troughtout my childhood and learned how to act in the group.
In 2007/2008, I was junior coordinator in my club. Trust and communication were key in my role in order to make everyone around me better & more confident.
The Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy has been a good apprenticeship for the golf college life. We were living as a collective group in a campus, training & travelling together to competitions. Despite we all had a strong desire to win, we always looked at the team performance.
- I am looking for a university and golf program that: I am looking for a university that is academically very good & challenging, pushes the students to expand their minds and learn to grow. My goal is to study economics and/or math.
I am looking for an ambitious golf team & a solid golf program that regularly competes at a high level.
- My college goals are: - Study in USA, the leading country of the world and to be part of a golf college program
- Excel in my studies and graduate with honors
- Compete at Division I or II level and contribute to my team's perfomances
- I am looking for a college golf coach that: - I can trust and that will make me feel confident
- can help me train hard --> continue to refresh fundamentals & strenghten my game plan
- can help to reach my full potential
- The strengths of my golf game are: I've always been a long hitter which I consider being an advantage because of the length of today's courses. At Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy last year, I worked really hard on my short irons and short game which have turned into a strength. This has really improved my game and I can now play more aggressively because I know that my short game will save me most of the time.
I'm aslo pretty strong mentally, I always have the desire to be the best in everything, golf included, and never let things go away from me. I always fight to the end.
- The weaknesses of my golf game are: Sometimes, I've had a hard time with my long irons, especially under pressure. We discovered that my pre-shot routine wasn't the same with these clubs than the rest of the bag. Knowing I'm not confident with long irons, I would have bad toughts going trough my mind and rush my preparation. Pre-shot is an aspect I've worked hard on but still needs improvement.
- I think my golf game will continue to improve because: - optimistic mindset & positive attitude
- strong desire to succeed, passion for the game
- readjust systematically my goals, work towards them to achieve them
- train hard
I was born in Singapore and moved back to Switzerland with my family at the age of 6.
I graduated in 2008 with honors from College Sainte Croix in Fribourg, Switzerland. My first major was Mathematic and Physic and my minor Economic and Law.
Then, I made the decision to have a gap year. I wanted something different to the life I had in cozy Switzerland. I needed a change, I needed to rock my boat. I knew I was a good golfer, I needed to find out if I was a great golfer. After having some discussions with my parents and some research later, we decided that I could take nine months in Orlando at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy.
After this decision was made, I have to admit that the idea of going abroad to live on my own at the age of eighteen scared me.
I boarded the plane in Zurich, Switzerland, with two suitcases and a golf bag. As the plane left the tarmac, my thoughts were to build a new chapter of my life that I can call my own. I was picked up in Orlando by my houseparents. They greeted me warmly and took me back to my new home. Here I met my new housemates. They were four South American boys. It was tough for me coming into the house not speaking Spanish but it didn't take me long to pick up some words.
Monday began our routine into the golfing world. It started with a six thirty in the morning wake up call followed by the shuttle taking us to the fitness center. Here we were drilled into shape by a military style trainer. My entire body was aching in then minutes. Finally at seven-forty-five we were home having breakfast (in Switzerland I wasn't up that early!!!). After a quick shower, we were then shuttled to the training center. Here we practiced for hours before we were given lunch. Finishing lunch we were put in teams to hone our skills that we learnt in the morning on the golf course. This is were I made my friends. I enjoyed the time I spent with my teammates on the course.
After dinner was my favourite as this was our free time amongst ourselves. I discovered a world of culture so different to mine. The food they ate was spicy and aromatic compared to what I had. The language they spoke was like music to my ears but we did have some things in common - golf and a facebook account!!!-
Some weekends we were free. Here with my new found friends we would hit Orlando finest theme parks to let our hair down. Other weekends we spent playing tournaments in different parts of the country. I enjoyed being part of the team, cheering my team and being cheered. I learned a lot about team spirit and sharing victories and defeats. In the evening, we would bond at the beach, playing volleyball which was very relaxing.
This experience will stay with me for a long time. I have learnt to be part of a community, understanding that we are all different but are able to get along easely. I have come out of this a stronger, more independent person and very much looking forward to my college years in America.
I am currently doing my freshman year in the faculty of economics at Lausanne University (ranked first in Switzerland and 8th in Europe for business). I'll have 40 credits at the end of the school year in June 2010. I would like to join a US university as a transfer student (sophomore) in Fall 2010.
